Wednesday, November 5th, 2008Mozilla Qt Port
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008heise online has an article about a Mozilla port to QT. Trolltech recently has been acquired by Nokia, and I’m really curious if Nokia will bring more QT based stuff on their internet tablets. IMO it makes less sense that Nokia maintain a browser and similar software of their own.
Pictures that lie :: Bilder, die lügen :: Images mensongères
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008Shorpy, who usually shares historic photos of the United States, makes an exception and provides a rather recent photo this time. It reminds me of an exhibition which I didn’t attend while it was in Schiltigheim – shame on me.
2008 United States presidential election
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008Well, let’s see if the US Americans get their things done well tonight. From an european point of view, we might have a favorite. But don’t forget that the winner has to cope with the 2008 “Very Great Depression” in his country, and that he has to obey the “Americans first” rule. So maybe we shouldn’t expect to much change after the election.
Tweaking your camera
Monday, November 3rd, 2008I trashed a Canon Powershot A610 camera during a bike tour in spring, so I bought its successor, an A650. I still prefered the A610 over the A650 for some details. Due to it’s better resolution (5 vs. 12.1 mpx) the latter just blows your hard drive while being even more clumsy than the A610. Anyway, both cameras are good in taking pictures even in low-light circumstances, and I don’t want to miss the flap display both have to offer. (more…)
Linus about B&W
Monday, November 3rd, 2008I think that Linus hits the nail on its head. Any ideology, regardless if it was of religious, political or technical nature, looses its legitimation as soon as it claims to be the only true one. And frankly, that’s what an ideology is all about.
Tilt – time to go to bed
Monday, November 3rd, 2008OK, last action today. I’ve been in Glashütte to do some mapping (Glashütte, Breitenbrunnen, Unterstmatt, Glashütte). The new boots still cause some painless points at my feet, but only at one particular point above the ankle of the right foot. Friends of mine recommend to buy some special socks like Falke socks. Will try it for sure.
The trip was windy, and there was less sun. I enjoyed it anyway, regardless of the troubles the new boots currently cause. They currently hurt, yes. But they also fit my feet very well so I’ll give some reasonable socks a try. Thanks Karin and Frank for the input so far!
And on the 8th day, god redesigned the whole planet…
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008Due to some problems concerning file naming and filesystem errors, I decided to completely restart from scratch. I have dropped all blanks from the file naming scheme, and prefixed them so there are no leading dashes in any of the filenames. (more…)
Who owns the first Minimoog ever sold?
Saturday, November 1st, 2008Dave Cornutt over at Sequence 15 shares some interesting details about the “prototype” and “production” Minimoog with the serial number 1001. Though nobody knows if he’s right, the post sounds plausible. Unfortunately, we cannot ask the master himself.
BTW: I just read that his Great-grandfather originated from Marburg, germany, and that he preferred his name to be pronounced as [moːk] (german) over [muːg] (anglo-saxon).
Foreign Ministry of Germany migrating to OSS
Saturday, November 1st, 2008Slashdot mentiones the move of desktop systems to opensource software in the german foreign ministry. After the cause of munich, it’s one further migration in a major public institution.
It’s not surprising that the move probably saves some licensing costs, while support services might remain a major cost factor. But me wonders how they get specialized closed source applications running on the Linux systems. They could use virtualisation, but then they still had to pay for MS Windows licenses.
