Dümmer als die (Sprach)polizei erlaubt?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Edit: This post already is available via Google search. The translation, however, is rather poor :) .

As promised, here are the pics of the N810 in the Otterbox 2000, mounted on my bike. This is the default position which I’m using:

So here we go again, pictures of some fungi I found during today’s walk in the (rainy) forests. White ones…

Openstreetmap-Mapping-Workshop am Donnerstag, 05.03.2009 um 19h

Friday, February 20th, 2009

osm_logo.png

The return of the snow to the black forest

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Since X-mas the snow was gone. But during the last week it returned. This sun-day was the right occasion for some hiking and, err, mapping :) .

Case for the Nokia N810

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

For this year’s biking trips, I want to replace my worthy Garmin GPSMap 60Cx with my Nokia N810. But unlike the GPSMap, the Nokia is neither water- nor shock-resistant. I searched the web for a bike mount, but that led me nowhere. So I came up with a rather DIY’ish solution, which I started today:

Relational vs. key-value databases

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

readwriteweb.com has an interesting article about relational vs. key-value databases, written by Tony Bain. I’m not much into databases ATM, but as web applications push aside desktop applications day by day, one should be prepared.

Salif Keïta – amen

Friday, February 13th, 2009

I’m just listening to »amen« (1991) of Salif Keïta (who seems to be related to Aly Keïta). While Salif wrote all of the songs, Joe Zawinul (the guy with the “very short fuse“) produced, arranged and orchestrated all tunes. Zawinul mentioned the recording in one of his interviews (german language) as a “must have”.

Gebabbel available in Ubuntu 9.04

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Gebabbel will be available in Ubuntu 9.04. Just type
sudo apt-get install gebabbel
to install it.

I feel honoured. May Gebabbel’s config files contaminate as many Ubuntu machines as possible ;-) .

Reit- und Wanderkarte

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

If you still think we cannot create cool 3D maps from our 2D data, see the Reit- und Wanderkarte. Though openstreetmap still lacks a consistent icon set, the map looks really great. I hope I can include the tiles in MaemoMapper on my N810 :) .

Viking 0.9.8 released

Guilhem Bonnefille announced the release of Viking 0.9.8. Please note that support for Google maps has been dropped recently, so you may want to keep the previous release on your hard drive.

Funny Fungi

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Today I found even more interesting fungis.

Reminds me of PUR foam:

Gelatinous ones:

And a wishy-washy one, which was moving in the winds:

The above pictures have been taken by me today. They are hereby released into public domain. For better quality pictures, feel free to contact me via electronic mail.

Mapping german-french history

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Today (and two weeks ago) I’ve done some mapping in the Bienwald. Though the weather was not optimal, I needed a bit of physical activity. I wanted to map some minor paths and ways by foot which are not fun to be mapped by bike.

The Bienwald contains lots of ancient remains, which more or less all belong to the german-french history, such as the Mundat stones:

Single-click-installer for Navit on Maemo

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Meanwhile, there’s a single-click-installer for Navit on the Nokia internet tablets. It will run out of the box without any further configuration, showing some place in southern germany. However, you may want to install maps covering the area where you live.

Fundraising for new Openstreetmap Servers

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The OpenStreetMap Foundation is a non-profit organisation which tries to support the project, e.g. by fundraising. For the upcoming API update from 0.5 to 0.6, planned between 2009-03-20 and 2009-03-23, it was useful to install new hardware, too. As the growth of memberships passed 90.000 citizens, new servers will sooner or later be necessary to run the project’s services during the next couple of years.

If you can spare some bucks, maybe you want to contribute.
