The winter arrived in europe, and even in Karlsruhe with its mild clime some snowflakes and temperatures less than -10°C have been detected sporadically. Surprisingly there’s not much snow at the nearby black forest yet (only about 20cm respectively 8″), but it seems to be enough for winter sport activities.
In Herrenwies there’s a center for cross-country skiing (see the yellows pin on the map). They provide a webcam and daily reports about the overall conditions (german language). The nearby Ruhestein also provides a webcam, and skiing there is possible up to 10PM thanks to some floodlights.
Not all tracks and paths used to prepare the ski runs between Herrenwies and Ruhestein are available in openstreetmap. Though access to the prepared runs is forbidden for pedestrians, I found some which have neither been prepared nor mapped yet:
I’m still greedy to get data from them to enter the various (named) routes into the database. I once wrote an electronic mail, but got no reply so far. I hope to have some time over the holidays to contact them directly. It also would be cool if they provided some tracks recorded by their snow groomer vehicle :) .
For the time being, I started to create the necessary relations and hope the first route stubs will appear on the hiking and bridle map within a week or so.

Make sure to get some cross-country skiis…
Good Job!
Last winter I spent some time learning to cross country ski and map my local trails. We got back on the skis for the first time yesterday and hope to get the more difficult trails done this year….
