I only maintain the presets, not the code. The feature you mention sounds desirable, so what about filing it in JOSM’s trac (http://josm.openstreetmap.de/)?

Would you be able to add the ability to search all the presets, including synonyms? This alone would make me more interested in using the presets, as I know what I want to add, I just don’t know which sub menus to go through to get it, and it’s faster to just enter the tags manually.

Bashing ? Those changes look much better to me than the previous layout. I share the feelings you explain in the next post – I’m pleased to see that not only am I not the only one have them, but on top of that my favourite editor changes to accommodate them. Thank you !
