Points of Interest

In the late morning hours the temperature in Karlsruhe was about 18°C. Usually the Ruhestein is about 6°C less, but surprisingly its webcam displayed 18° as well, so I immediately grabbed the bike and went to the station, heading towards Baiersbronn, Black Forest (about 500m).

I left the train in Baiersbronn and went to Mitteltal and Obertal. Here’s a small lake I found there:

I improved lots of details. Bridges were missing, tracks were missing, residential streets were tagged as tracks and so on. The data is not perfect now, but much better than before.

Next I went to the Ruhestein (915m). For uphill climbing I chose the old Ruhestein road, which surprisingly was easy to cope with. I mainly used gears 7 through 10 of the 14 gears the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 provides. That’s what the old road looks like:

For the way back I have used sat images to detect tracks still missing in the database of openstreetmap (luckily there are plenty of them :) ). The tracks went up and down every now and then. Here’s an uphill one, which required gears 2 through 4 of the Speedhub. I guess I will soon replace the chainset by a bigger one to be prepared for even steeper inclines:

I added lots of tracks and other details to the database. It was interesting to see that I was still (respectively again) at an altitude of 885m (Elmehütte shelter) resp. 706m (Satteleihütte shelter) near Baiersbronn. After the Satelleihütte, however, several steep declines followed each other down to Baiersbronn. A really nice mapping trip:
